Your First Botox Appointment: Everything You Need to Know
Botox is one of the most trusted and widely performed non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the world — and with good reason. With millions of treatments performed each year, it’s a go-to solution for smoothing fine lines, softening wrinkles, and restoring a refreshed, youthful appearance.
At Enhanced Medical Aesthetics, we believe that education is empowerment. If you're considering Botox for the first time, we’re here to help you feel fully informed — and completely confident — before your appointment.
Disclaimer: The following is for educational purposes only and does not replace a personalized consultation with a licensed healthcare provider.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles. It works by blocking nerve signals that cause repetitive muscle movements — the root cause of dynamic lines and wrinkles.
As the muscles relax, the overlying skin appears smoother and more rested. You’ll start seeing results within 3 to 7 days, with optimal results visible by the 2-week mark.
What Areas Can Botox Treat?
Botox is incredibly versatile and can be customized to suit your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. Commonly treated areas include:
Forehead lines
Frown lines (the “11s” between the eyebrows)
Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
Lip lines (smoker’s lines)
Chin dimpling
Jawline slimming / TMJ relief
Neck bands (off-label use)
Some treatment areas — such as for TMJ or neck bands — are considered off-label. All procedures are administered by Nurse Practitioner, Colleen in accordance with Canadian practice guidelines.
What to Expect During Treatment?
Your Botox treatment will be quick and minimally invasive — usually completed in about 15-30 minutes. We use a fine needle to administer small, precise injections into the targeted muscles.
There’s no need for anesthesia, and no downtime required. Many of our patients return to work or daily activities immediately after their appointment.
Does Botox Hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch or light stinging. Discomfort is minimal and brief. If you're particularly sensitive, we can apply a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable.
When Will I See Results?
Initial softening: 3–5 days post-treatment
Full results: Around 10–14 days
Longevity: Typically lasts 3–4 months, sometimes longer depending on your metabolism and lifestyle.
To maintain optimal results, many clients return for maintenance treatments every 3–4 months.
When Should I Start Botox?
There’s no “right” age to begin Botox — it depends entirely on your goals. Some patients start preventative Botox in their mid-to-late 20s to soften early expression lines. Others begin when fine lines become more visible with age.
At Enhanced Medical Aesthetics, we tailor every plan to your skin, your goals, and your natural beauty — never a one-size-fits-all approach.
Is Botox Safe?
Yes. Botox is approved by Health Canada and has been used safely for both medical and cosmetic purposes for decades. Our injectors are licensed medical professionals with advanced training in facial anatomy and aesthetic techniques.
Botox is not recommended if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neuromuscular conditions. A full medical history will be reviewed at your consultation to ensure your safety.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment?
To reduce the risk of bruising and swelling, we recommend avoiding the following for at least 3–5 days prior to treatment:
Alcohol
Aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatories (unless prescribed)
Fish oil, vitamin E, or other blood-thinning supplements
Herbal remedies like Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng, and garlic
We’ll also provide detailed pre- and post-care instructions customized to your needs.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Botox is generally very well tolerated. Possible temporary side effects may include:
Mild swelling or redness at the injection site
Small bruises
Tenderness or tightness
Rarely, a mild headache
These effects typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. If you ever have questions after your treatment, our team is here to support you.
